Why are weighted blankets so expensive?

sensory blanket weighted blanket for kids with anxiety weighted blankets

A weighted blanket can be a investment, but if you choose wisely it can be a life changer for someone with anxiety and sleep issues.

Not all weighted blankets are made the equally and yes some are very overpriced! Let me break down the cost of a weighted blanket:

  1. Filling: the top two most common choices are polypropylene (plastic) and glass. Unless you have a wholesaler or traveling to China anytime soon, this is by far the most expensive part of a weighted blanket.
  2. Fabric: I always recommend getting a quality fabric...I mean your spending the time and money on the blanket so get something that will last! As a general guide, the higher the thread count, the smoother and more durable your fabric will be. Again, depending on the fabric you choose, this could be a costly portion of the project.
  3. Seamstress: Let me tell you, weighted blankets are not fun to make :) It can be very messy with the filling and calculating how many pellets should fill each chamber can be frustrating. Unless you have a lot of time or a incredible human being to make one for you, finding a seamstress can be very costly. In fact, probably more so than the materials.

After reading 1-3 I hope you can get an idea of why weighted blankets are expensive. A lot of materials and craftsmanship goes into the construction of the blanket.
